“Gemlik Zeytini” Have Been Officially Registered by The European Union

Türkiye has 42 geographical indication products that are waiting for registration.

The Minister of Science, Industry and Technology Mehmet Fatih Kacır has made evaluations about the geographical indication products that have been registered by the European Union (EU). Kaçır has stated that there are 1382 geographical indication products already existing in Turkey and also 692 applications filed in order to receive a geographical indication that are still being processed by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (TÜRKPATENT).

Kacır has conveyed that TÜRKPATENT, by using its authority to file in an application directly to the European Union for the first time in its history, has filed for a collective application for the registration of 10 of the geographical indication products this year. 

While reminding that “Çağlayancerit Cevizi” (walnut) is the 11th product to be registered with the geographical indication reference, Kacır stated, “Following Çağlayancerit Cevizi, Gemlik Zeytini (olive) has also been registered by the EU. With this registration we now have 12 geographical indications that have been granted the right of protection by the EU. Gaziantep Baklavası, Aydın İnciri (fig), Aydın Kestanesi (chestnut), Malatya Kayısısı (apricot), Milas Zeytinyağı (olive oil), Bayramiç Beyazı (white nectarine), Taşköprü Sarımsağı (garlic), Giresun Tombul Fındığı (hazelnut), Antakya Künefesi and Suruç Narı (pomegranate) have all been registered before.”

“Among these, the applications for the Afyonkarahisar Pastırması (pastrami), Afyonkarahisar Sucuğu (Turkish style sausage), İnegöl Köftesi (Turkish meatballs), Kayseri Pastırması (pastrami), Sucuğu (sausage) and Mantısı (Turkish dumplings), Antep Fıstığı (pistachio), Edremit Körfezi Yeşil Çizik Zeytini (green olives), Maraş Çöreği (a biscuit like pastry) and Tarhanası (dryed vegetables and yoghurt crumbled into powder and later used for preparing a soup), Gaziantep Melengiç Kahvesi (coffee), Araban Sarımsağı (garlic), Tonya Tereyağı (butter), Erzurum Su Böreği (a kind of pastry), Aydın Memecik Zeytini and Zeytinyağı (olive and olive oil), İpsala Pirinci (rice), Bursa Kestane Şekeri (candied chestnut), Kırkağaç Kavunu (melon), Demirci Hünnabı (jujube), Amasya Çiçek Bamyası (okra), Bursa Siyah İnciri (fig), Hopa Hamsili Ekmeği (bread made with fish), Safranbolu Safranı (saffron), Manisa Sultani Çekirdeksiz Üzümü (grapes) and Mesir Macunu (paste made with herbs and spices), Kilis Zeytinyağı (olive oil), Bingöl Balı (honey), Bursa Şeftalisi (peach), Ezine Peyniri (a cheese), Rize Çayı (black tea), Urla Sakız Enginarı (artichoke), Ayaş Domatesi (tomato), Hüyük Çileği (strawberry), Isparta Gülyağı (rose oil), Silifke Yoğurdu (yoghurt), Tarsus Sarıulak Zeytini (olive), Hatay Kaytaz Böreği, Osmaniye Yer Fıstığı (peanut), Melli İnciri (fig), Adana Şalgamı (juice made out of turnip) and Sinop Kestane Balı (sweet chestnut honey) have already been put in.”

With the “Edremit Zeytinyağı” (olive oil) and “Milas Yağlı Zeytini” (olive) both of which have been announced registered by the European Commission, there are 44 geographical indication applications
