Mehmet Fatih KACIR, Minister of Industry and Technology, who was in Geneva, Switzerland, to attend the Ministerial Meeting organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), stated that Türkiye has made significant gains in the field of intellectual property.

Minister of Industry and Technology Mehmet Fatih KACIR, who is in Geneva, Switzerland to attend the Ministerial Meeting held within the scope of the 66th Session of the WIPO General Assembly from 8-17 July 2025, stated that Türkiye has achieved significant gains in intellectual property.

KACIR drew attention to the important gains Türkiye has made in the field of intellectual property over the past 23 years, saying:
"23 years ago, the number of patent applications was only 414. Last year, there were more than 10,000 patent applications. This year, the number is running 20% higher than last year."

KACIR noted that WIPO is an international organization managing areas of intellectual property such as patents, design registrations, and geographical indications on a global level, and explained that Türkiye actively participates in WIPO’s work.

"We make significant contributions to WIPO’s efforts, especially to make the field of intellectual property more inclusive and to spread IP awareness in all countries," he said.

Recalling that there are also joint projects carried out by WIPO and the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office, KACIR emphasized once again that Türkiye has achieved very significant gains in the field of intellectual property over the past 23 years.

Pointing out that Türkiye ranks second in the world in design registration applications and geographical indication registrations, sixth in trademark applications, and twelfth in patent applications, KACIR said:
"This shows the level Türkiye has reached in intellectual property capacity. 23 years ago, the number of patent applications was only 414. Last year, there were more than 10,000 patent applications. This year, the number is running 20% higher than last year."

KACIR indicated that these figures are concrete indicators of the capacity reached by the research, development, and innovation infrastructure and ecosystem, and added that as the Ministry, they will continue to strongly support these areas.

– 3 important pilot projects with WIPO

KACIR stated that they are preparing to implement three important pilot projects with WIPO:
"One of them is pilot projects aimed at transforming geographically registered products into higher value-added products. Here, we are taking swift steps especially in converting Anatolia’s local values into economic value," he said.

Minister KACIR referred to the “Anadoludakiler” project carried out under the auspices of President Recep Tayyip ERDOĞAN’s wife, Emine ERDOĞAN, saying:
"We strongly support activities aimed at transforming the local values and geographically indicated products of all cities in Anatolia into economic value."

KACIR said that the work carried out with WIPO has attracted global interest and continued as follows:
"Another important project we are conducting with WIPO is aimed at accelerating the commercialization of knowledge at universities. Here, we are implementing a pilot project in cooperation with WIPO and the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office, carried out by Karadeniz Technical University, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University, Giresun University, and Samsun 19 Mayıs University."

KACIR stated that Türkiye has achieved significant gains through technoparks:
"Technoparks are infrastructures established under the leadership of our universities and currently host more than 11,500 companies in Türkiye, working with a focus on research, development, and innovation. We are also continuing this cooperation project with WIPO to take this experience to a higher level," he said.

Explaining that another project aims to increase the intellectual property capacity of SMEs, KACIR said that all these projects were discussed in meetings with WIPO officials and that they agreed on further strengthening cooperation.
