Türkiye: The Shining Star of the World in Patents and Trademarks

Türkiye demonstrated strong performance globally in patents, trademarks, and design fields last year.

According to the “World Intellectual Property Indicators 2025 Report” published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Turkiye has risen to the top globally with a 26.1% share of women inventors applying under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). In addition, Türkiye ranked 10th worldwide with 10,004 domestic patent applications.

Minister of Industry and Technology Mehmet Fatih KACIR stated that Türkiye has achieved a new success in the global league of intellectual property, saying: “We are the 10th country in the world in domestic patent applications. In the growth rate of domestic patents, we are among the top three fastest-rising countries in the world. In international patent applications, we are the world leader with a 26.1% share of women inventors.”

In his social media post on November 23, 2025, Minister KACIR emphasized Türkiye’s progress:
“Türkiye has achieved a new success in the global league of intellectual property. WIPO’s 2025 World Intellectual Property Indicators Report clearly reveals our country’s rise in many fields, from patents to designs, and from trademarks to women inventors. We are the 10th country in domestic patent applications. We are among the top three most rapidly rising countries in the growth of domestic patents. In international patent applications, we are the world leader with a 26.1% share of women inventors.”

KACIR also noted that Turkiye ranks 6th in domestic trademark applications and added:
“In domestic design applications, we are the 3rd in the world. This picture is a strong reflection of the great efforts put forth in technology and innovation by our researchers, engineers, entrepreneurs, and especially our women. Türkiye continues its path in global competition in intellectual property with determination.”

The World Intellectual Property Indicators 2025 Report is of great importance for highlighting the positive impact of innovation and industrial policies in enabling countries to fully realize their potential.

Strong Performance in Patents, Trademarks, and Designs

The report indicates that Türkiye demonstrated strong performance globally in patents, trademarks, and design fields last year. In 2024, Türkiye recorded an 18.4% increase in patent applications and a 38.9% increase in registrations compared to the previous year, surpassing the global average. A significant leap was observed in international patent applications made by women. Accordingly, Türkiye became the global leader with a 26.1% share of women inventors applying under PCT.

Between 2014–2024, Türkiye ranked 2nd in the world in per capita patent application growth, and 7th in domestic utility model applications. With the number of patent experts reaching 181, Türkiye ranked 10th globally in this field. In the ranking of patent offices, Türkiye rose from 23rd to 18th, entering the top 20 for the first time in history.

Türkiye at the Top of Europe in Trademark Applications

In 2024, Türkiye ranked 6th in the world and 2nd in Europe in domestic trademark applications, with 366,543 classes filed. In domestic trademark registrations, Türkiye secured 1st place in Europe and 4th place in the world with 284,781 classes registered.

Türkiye: 3rd in the World in Designs

Last year, Türkiye ranked 3rd in the world with 41,875 domestic design applications. When examining the distribution of design applications by sectors, the report shows that furniture and household goods accounted for 25.8%, advertising for 19.2%, and textiles and accessories for 13.4%.

Türkiye ranked 4th in the world in design intensity based on GDP, and 5th based on population.

Türkiye’s Global Ranking

According to 2024 data in the report, Türkiye ranked 10th globally with 10,004 domestic patent applications, following China (1,672,001), the United States (270,295), Japan (237,169), South Korea (195,786), India (63,217), Germany (40,085), Russia (21,502), France (12,751), and the United Kingdom (11,105).

Türkiye was followed by Italy (9,120), Iran (8,314), North Korea (6,936), Brazil (5,752), and Canada (4,304).

In domestic trademark applications worldwide, Turkey ranked 6th with 366,543 classes, following China (6,786,172), Russia (523,570), India (512,597), the United States (493,415), and Brazil (425,953).

Türkiye was followed by Iran (302,009), South Korea (265,457), Japan (240,417), France (239,028), Germany (207,784), the United Kingdom (200,303), Mexico (159,140), and Indonesia (127,832).

With 41,875 domestic design applications, Turkiye ranked 3rd in the world after China (803,234) and South Korea (51,765).

Türkiye was followed by Italy (36,754), India (36,118), the United Kingdom (30,985), Germany (28,202), France (26,821), Japan (20,675), the United States (20,670), Spain (13,916), Russia (7,723), Iran (7,545), Brazil (5,892), and Indonesia (5,776).
