Experiencing a domestic and national transformation in every field of industry, Türkiye is also running a record in industrial property rights.

Industry and Technology Minister Mustafa VARANK announced that 290 thousand domestic industrial property applications were made in 2022. “For the first time since 1994, domestic patent applications made to TÜRKPATENT have surpassed foreign patent applications. The number of patent registrations in Türkiye has increased 46 times in the last 20 years.” said.

Minister VARANK said, “As Turkish industry develops, grows and gains a research and development culture, new records are coming in the field of industrial property.” he said.

A total of 290 thousand 14 domestic industrial property applications were made to the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office in 2022, including 9 thousand 9 patents, 5 thousand 502 utility models, 197 thousand 235 brands and 78 thousand 268 designs. Compared to the previous year, an increase of 7 percent in domestic patent applications, 25 percent in domestic utility model applications, 12 percent in domestic trademark applications and 32 percent in domestic design applications was realized.

Domestic patent applications made to TÜRKPATENT for the first time since 1994 exceeded foreign patent applications.

While 1.460 foreign patent applications were made against 414 domestic patent applications in 2002, 6.847 foreign patent applications were made against 9.009 domestic patent applications last year. The number of patent registrations increased by 2 percent compared to 2021 and rose to 3.407. Thus, the number of patent registrations in Türkiye has increased 46 times in the last 20 years. The total number of registered geographical indications reached 1.313, with 291 geographical indications registered last year and 32 geographical indications registered in January of this year.

In addition to companies and citizens residing in our country, industrial property applications can be made to the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office from different countries of the world.

Last year, 19 universities were among the top 50 companies applying for domestic patents.

In the distribution of industrial property applications by province, Istanbul, Ankara and Bursa took the first three places in patents, Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir in brands and utility models, and Istanbul, Bursa and Izmir in design.

The provinces with the highest number of geographical indication applications in 2022 were Konya with 46 applications, Karaman with 29 applications and Muğla with 18 applications.
